Dec. 29, 1972 – TIME MARCHES ON
The Burlington Northern Railway boarded up its old Great Northern depot last week and operations were transferred to the former Northern Pacific station in Sandpoint. Though the GN building was the newer of the two, the NP depot is on the new main line of the merged railroad system. The old depot requires changes to fit the extra personnel and remodeling is in progress. Office operations are being expanded into the space formerly used as a passenger waiting room.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
Brad Palmen, Sophomore Class president, said the class had practiced for the Snow Dance that was part of the school assembly before Christmas break. The dance was supposed to make it snow.
Ponderettes, the SHS girls’ drill team, were to march at halftime of the Sandpoint game at the Christmas tournament Dec. 27-29 at Spokane Falls Community College. The song for the drill is “Jesus Christ Superstar,” said team member Janice Rainey.

WAR MEMORIAL FIELD PROPOSAL
The Bulldog Bench put a price tag on its proposed War Memorial Field improvement project, but it may be too high. The proposal calls for updated field lighting, a 25x75 ft. building, underground sprinkling system and landscaping, at a total estimated cost of $71,836.25 over a two-year period.

Dec. 29, 1922 – POOR REMEMBERED
The Salvation Army distributed Christmas baskets to the poor and needy of the city, an activity also entered into by the Red Cross chapter, the Camp Fire Girls and the various lodges of the city, so that all had an ample Christmas dinner. The weather was mild the few days before and on Christmas day no cases of suffering were reported, nor of need to which responses had not already been made.

CHILDREN ENTERTAINED
Among the public Christmas activities of the lodges was the Elks annual party for the children of the city. The “Bills” gave the kids a free show at the Gem and Scenic Saturday, a juvenile picture with little Wesley Barry in the star role. Standing room at both the theaters was at a premium an hour before the film’s first flicker on the screen. After the shows, youngsters were presented with bags of Christmas candy and nuts by their “big brothers,” the Elks.

BANK REMEMBERS YOUNGSTERS
Youngsters were also remembered by the Bonner County National bank, which before Christmas purchased 100 subscriptions to “Boys’ Life,” the official Boy Scout magazine. The bank subsequently extended the list to include all the scouts in the city.
