SHS loses close game at the Punahou Invite
Despite a determined effort by the Bulldogs, Sandpoint came up just short in their second game in the Punahou Invite in Hawaii, losing to Oakwood from North Hollywood, Calif., 55-46.
It was the Bulldogs second game of four in the holiday tournament.
Sandpoint stayed within striking distance against Oakwood the entire game. After the first half the two were tied 10-10 with help from Rusty Lee, Arie VanDenBerg, and Parker Childs.
“I felt we had our legs under us today better than yesterday,” head coach Brian Childs said.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs kept the game close, staying within three points of Oakwood at the break. Randy Lane and Ty Eacret scored points for Sandpoint along with Lee, VanDenBerg, and Childs.
Heading into halftime the Bulldogs were down 26-23.
"From an effort perspective, we showed a lot of grit," Childs said.
In the second half, Sandpoint continued their battle, always staying within six points of the North Hollywood team. Their defense held Oakwood to 14 points in the third quarter to Sandpoint's 10 points.
“I thought we were really good defensively against a team that had a lot of athleticism and a lot of size,” Childs said.
The Bulldogs were down 40-33 heading into the fourth quarter. Lee hit 10 points but it wasn't enough to counter the freethrows given away to Oakwood.
“We played one of our best games from an effort and defensive standpoint,” Childs said.
Although the final score isn't what the Bulldogs wanted, 55-46 loss, Childs remained optimistic after the game.
“I feel like we won the hustle game,” Childs said.
Sandpoint plays again on Thursday against the loser of Wednesday night's game.
