Priest River unable to capitalize on opportunities in loss to Lumberjacks

PRIEST RIVER — A poor night from the free-throw line doomed Priest River girls basketball in a 50-36 loss to St. Maries on Tuesday.

The Spartans were 13-of-35 from the free-throw line.

"This was the toughest loss for us all year because we were kind of in control the whole game, we just couldn't finish," head coach Gary Stewart said.

Stewart said his team missed about 10 lay-ins.

"We had them right where we wanted them because they were turning the ball over all night," he said.

St. Maries outscored Priest River 13-3 in the fourth quarter.

Stewart said the defensive pressure the Spartans put on the Lumberjacks was outstanding.

"We did so many good things, we just couldn't put it in the bucket," he said.

Samantha Pound grabbed 8 points, and Lizzie McCracken and Lilly Freitas each scored 7. Addisen Kingery added 6.

Kellogg completed a regular season sweep of the Spartans on Monday night with a 57-26 win. The defeat dropped Priest River to 0-5 in Intermountain League play.

The Spartans (3-11) wrap up the regular season Wednesday with a home game against Bonners Ferry. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Priest River Elementary or Priest River Junior High. The fourth-seeded Spartans head to top-seeded Timberlake at 3 p.m. Saturday to open the 3A District 1 tournament.
