CEMETERY IS PIKE MOON’S MONUMENT

The death last week of Lawrence G. “Pike” Moon, II, marked the end of a long career. Few area residents other than close friends of the Moon family are aware that Mr. Moon developed Pinecrest Memorial Park when he purchased in 1923 a 10-acre tract, including the old Piedmont Cemetery, containing the graves of early residents. He and Owen Hagland, Pinecrest’s first caretaker, improved the old cemetery, renaming it Pinecrest Cemetery. About 20 years ago, Mr. Moon purchased 40 additional acres adjacent to the original site. Pinecrest Memorial Park is today a monument to the man who developed it – Lawrence. G. Moon II.

Deputy Sheriff Kuchenbecker returned Tuesday from a four days’ trip to Nordman, snowshoeing much of the way. He was serving papers in civil cases.

WHO OWNS A GLACIER?

When the retreat of a glacier leaves a piece of ground uncovered, whose is it? The state’s, say laws of France and of Italy. The canton’s, says Scotland’s general law. But in the Grisons (a Swiss canton), the commune owns both the glacier and the ground it covers, so that a body like a parish council often possesses millions of tons of good, blue ice.

CIVIC CLUB KEEPS REST ROOM

The 14 points, 21 demands, article 10 and the mandate of Yap all went by the board Tuesday when a city council committee and a Civic club committee came to an amicable adjustment of the difficulties which have ever and anon-recently–jarred the jamb on the rest room door into the fire station. “Yes, sir, it’s settled,” smiled one of the ladies. “We have been given absolute jurisdiction.” “Hmph,” a councilman said, if a councilman can say hmph, “we let them have the room. They can do anything they want with it – except for permanent alterations. Otherwise, it’s theirs, to have, to hold, to lock, bar, bolt, police, regulate or any blooming thing they please.” Which proves that where there’s a will, there’s a woman, and the ladies absolutely can’t be resisted.
