Sandpoint High School senior Luke McCorkle signed his letter of intent to play defensive back at Whitworth University in Spokane on Wednesday at Sandpoint high school’s weight room.

McCorkle, who had four different offers from Carroll College, University of Minnesota-Morris, and Presentation College, said Whitworth felt right as soon as he stepped foot on campus.

“The campus is beautiful,” McCorkle said. “You really feel like a family over there and I’m just excited to meet up with the coaches and get to work.”

During McCorkle’s senior year at Sandpoint, he registered one interception and 12 pass deflections.

He also pitched in on special teams by returning kicks with over 400 net return yards.

“I’m hoping to get down there and get some kick return work in,” McCorkle said. “I feel like returning kicks was a big part of my game last year. Having an opportunity to be shifty again was great.”

McCorkle was also able to get shifty on the offensive side of the ball during his senior season. He spent some time at wide receiver, and he said “Understanding both sides of the ball is a huge asset for any player.”

He was excited to put pen to paper so he could make his commitment to Whitworth as soon as possible.

“I was super excited when I got my graphic from Whitworth in their jersey,” McCorkle said. “I’m just waiting for the day where I get to put my cleats back on.”

Before McCorkle heads to Whitworth’s campus in Spokane next fall, he’ll finish off his final track season at Sandpoint High School.

McCorkle also said the academic fit was right for him. He’ll be majoring in health science and minoring in business.

“They’ve done a lot with their health science program and I’m looking forward to learning from some valuable teachers,” he said. “I just enjoy learning about the body and helping people and coaching people. Hopefully one day I can coach and train others like my coaches do.”
