SPOKANE, Wash. — Three Sandpoint wrestlers went undefeated on the first day of the Pacific Northwest Classic on Friday at University High in Spokane.

Freshman Ashlei Hawkins notched a 2-0 record at 120 pounds to earn a spot in the semifinals Saturday, while Andrew Duke (106) and Greg Belgarde (285) both went 1-0 to secure semifinal berths in their respective weight classes.

After day one, Sandpoint sits in seventh place out of 12 teams.

"I thought we came out and were aggressive," head coach Jake Stark said. "We didn't really hold anything back and most of our guys did fairly well."

Stark was impressed by Hawkins' performance.

"He's hanging in there against some really tough kids," he said. "He's a hard-working kid and I love having him in our room."

Braden Norris (132), Adam Belgarde (145), Darrian Resso (152) and Austin Smith (220) all went 1-1 in their matches.

"I thought Calvin Hinds wrestled really solid at 170 as well," Stark said. "[Smith] and [Hinds], I have a good feeling they are going to place Saturday."

This was Resso's first action of the season. Stark said Resso, who competed at state last year, helped fire the team up in his return.

"He wrestled really solid his first match, just totally broke the kid," Stark said. "... It was a great feeling to have him back."

Shane Sherrill (138) and Blake Sherrill (182) were unable to compete on day one of the tourney. They both had to stay back in Sandpoint and clear snow from their house because they couldn't get out of their driveway, Stark said. Fortunately, the Sherrills can make the trip Saturday and will hit the mat after forfeiting their opening matches.

Weigh-ins start at 8 a.m. Saturday.
