FPC, World Relief team up on 'kitchen kits'

First Presbyterian Church of Sandpoint teaches the importance of reaching out into the world to share the love of God through Christ, Pastor Andy Kennaly said.

Recently, Kennaly said the congregation discovered a practical way to do this in the community. In the near future, 300 to 350 refugees from Afghanistan are expected to settle in the Spokane area. World Relief Spokane will welcome them, find housing, connect them with jobs, day care, and other resources for their families. They will also help equip their homes with kitchen and household items, and their children with school supplies.

World Relief has listed on its website how volunteers can help, by giving “kitchen kits” with such things as can openers, cookware, and dishes; household items such as bed linens, pillows, towels, shampoo, etc.; and school supplies.

First Presbyterian Church of Sandpoint chose to provide kitchen kit, Kennaly said in a press release. Members and friends brought items to the church throughout October. Some bought cookware, from mixing bowls to plates and cups, while others donated money. Others who wanted to help but were not from the congregation also brought items to donate, Kennaly said. Then, in late October, the Membership and Mission Committee gathered to assemble the boxes and the following week, monetary donations went to purchase items for two additional complete kits.

In all, Kennaly said seven kits were assembled and placed in large boxes. In mid-November, the boxes delivered to World Relief Spokane.

“The entire project was such a rewarding experience, not only for the refugees, but also for members and friends of First Presbyterian Church,” Kennaly said. “May God bless the lives of strangers welcomed in the name of Christ.”
