Second quarter drought dooms Bulldogs in loss to Lakeland
RATHDRUM — A scoreless second quarter doomed Sandpoint girls basketball in a Battle for the Paddle loss to Lakeland on Friday.
The Bulldogs showed glimmers of life offensively, but they weren’t able to do enough to keep pace with the Hawks.
Head coach Will Love said his team just had too many self-inflicted wounds.
"The big thing is we continuously fouled Lakeland," he said. "One of the things that happens when you foul is that can take you out of your rhythm ... We've been working with the girls on that idea that you don't need to foul, you can play great defense and not foul."
The two teams traded the lead a few times early on, but a 3-pointer from Anna Reinink with 1:21 left in the first allowed Sandpoint to carry a 11-9 advantage into the second.
Unfortunately, those were the last points the Bulldogs would score in the first half, helping the Hawks take a 18-11 lead into the break.
"You can't have quarters like that, especially in a league game," Love said.
The free-throw line was the difference for Lakeland in the first half. They were 10 of 19 from the charity stripe while Sandpoint was 0 for 7.
The Hawks opened the second half on a 10-2 run to extend their lead. Sandpoint attempted to mount a comeback in the waning moments of the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late.
Take away the second quarter, and Sandpoint outscored Lakeland 34-31.
Love said the Bulldogs got plenty of clean looks at the basket throughout the night, they just didn't convert them.
Kelsey Cessna and Daylee Driggs each scored 12 points. Sofia Platte grabbed six rebounds and Driggs finished with four steals and four rebounds.
Sandpoint (8-7, 1-4 IEL) hosts Lakeland at 3 p.m. next Saturday for Senior Night.
