Jan. 27, 1972 – WINDS AGAIN LASH COUNTY

Lashing winds, this time from the north, struck Bonner County again Monday night and by Tuesday morning, blowing, drifting snow had created another storm emergency throughout the area. Winds gusting to 45 miles per hour cut visibility to a few feet in many parts of the county. All schools were closed Tuesday as county roads became impassable. Drifts formed almost as fast as county work crews could plow, and the Farm to Market Rd. (Note: In 2022, known as Colburn-Culver Rd.) was closed to Colburn by the blizzard. Toppling trees again plagued utility services.

NEWS FROM DUFORT by Mrs. V.H. Harris

The Westmond Grange will host a pancake feed the evening of the 29th. Non-Grangers are invited.

The Westmond Grange held its annual oyster supper Friday and a young peoples’ dance Saturday.

We are sorry to report that Mrs. Lilly Shirk on Dufort Road was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in Spokane this week with a broken hip. She fell on the ice as she was going to the mailbox. She will probably be there a while, so friends can write to her in care of St. Luke’s.

Jan. 27, 1922 – FISHERMEN RAISE SUSPICIONS

H. Van Gundy, Hi Remer, Frank Antisdel, Charles Spoor and “Dad” Hartman went on up the lake Sunday for whitefish. Herb Allen has a sled back of the Allen block in which he carries wood to the basement. At an early hour Sunday, the fishermen purloined the toboggan to take their outfit across the bridge and up the lake. About the time Mr. Allen found his sled gone, he heard that a gang of moonshiners had stolen the sled for use in conveying a consignment of white liquor to Sandpoint from some unknown port of entry up the lake. Sheriff Kirkpatrick was given the alarm and set out afoot, hot on the trail. He overtook the fishing party up at Dave Rowland’s summer home. Explanations were made with the result that the sled was left in the custody of its purloiners until their trip back to town Tuesday, when the sheriff and Deputy Decker got a mess of whitefish for their long hike.

HEROES OF DIAMOND LAKE RESCUE CITED

For their heroism in saving Miss Mary Helphrey (Note: later Sandpoint educator Mrs. Mary Parker), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.S. Helphrey of this city, and R.E. Creager and her daughter, Ruth, in a boating accident at Diamond lake last summer, in which Mr. Creager lost his life, Wray Farmin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl D. Farmin of Sandpoint, and William Johnson, a Spokane boy, have been awarded the gold medal of the National Boy Scout court of honor. The presentations will take place this noon, Johnson’s at Spokane and Farmin’s before a student assembly at Oberlin (Ohio) college, where he is a student.
