Dive into ocean fun with marine biologists
Have you ever wondered what it might be like to live in Antarctica? What kind of work do people do there? What kind of animals live at the South Pole?
You can get answers to these questions and more at the library from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, as marine biologists Darren and Megan Roberts come to host a presentation and a craft. Darren and Megan both work several months out of the year in Antarctica performing research and working with marine life and they’re excited to share their experiences with the community.
Megan is a lifelong friend of mine - we both went to school together at Hope Elementary, and then Clark Fork Jr./Sr. High. She’s one of the smartest and kindest people that I know, so I was very excited to get the opportunity to reach out to her and Darren to share their experiences with you!
After the presentation, you’ll get a chance to create an ocean in a bottle by layering in dyed liquids of different densities to recreate the layers of the ocean and carry it home with you. Did you know that light cannot penetrate the ocean past a depth of 3,280 feet? While this is certainly an incredible depth, the deepest point of the ocean is actually 35,867 feet below the surface. While your bottle won’t be that big, you’ll get to see what the ocean looks like starting at the very top and going all the way down.
Of course, if you suffer from thalassophobia, you can always skip the shadowy bottle and come learn about some incredible and adorable penguins.
