Trout fry added to Priest River area waters

100 Years Ago — 1922
Fish planted
Last Friday, W.W. Picket Brought down 80,000 trout fry from the hatchery at Sandpoint. They were taken to the Upper West Branch by Lester Binkley and E. G. Peterson. Homer Redmond, of Redmond’s Barber Shop, was out the same day to solicit funds from local fishermen to pay the expense of this distribution. An organization of local followers of Isaac Walton should be effected to take charge of work of this kind.

Picnic in Spokane
The Kaniksu Club is sponsoring a picnic of present and former residents of Priest River at Natatorium Park Sunday, July 24, gathering at 2 o’clock for dinner and remaining during the balance of the day and evening. Folks are requested to bring their lunch baskets and cups. The club women will furnish coffee.
80 Years Ago — 1942
Thirty-five from Priest River
The selective service has announced that 116 men have been called from Bonner County for July. Thirty-five of these men are from Priest River. A banquet in honor of these boys will be held this Thursday at the Red Rooster.

Great huckleberry year
The huckleberries in some of the patches are as large as cherries. One variety even resembles the Bing cherry in color.

Dentist is new associate
Richard M. Sonntag, D.D.S., is the new associate of Dr. David Beeson in the dental offices of the Kaniksu Clinic. Born in Spokane, Dr. Sonntag came to Priest River as a child with his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Richard H. Sonntag. He received his dental degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisc. His wife is Cheryl Veltri of Priest River.

Record larch recognized
A new Idaho state record larch has been found near the Four Corners Cutoff Road 12 miles north of Priest River on the Priest Lake Ranger District of the Kaniksu National Forest.
40 Years Ago — 1982
Balloon is a traveler
What happens when a helium balloon is set free? Kelli Tharp, six-year-old daughter of Robin and Tom Tharp of Priest Lake, found out last week when she set one free. About 48 hours later, she received a phone call from two youths in Bay City, Mich. The balloon had traveled 1500 miles. The Bay City newspaper verified the story.

Work stopped
Work on the Priest Lake hydroelectric project was halted Tuesday as the result of a protest action staged earlier in the day by lake residents at the Department of Lands office at Cavanaugh Bay.

Small cuts ribbon
Library Board Chairman Kay Small cut the ribbon during Saturday’s grand opening of the refurbished Falter Building housing the Priest River Library.
