| June 1, 2022 1:00 AM

Students at the House of the Lord Christian Academy in Oldtown got a surprise visit from Smokey Bear on May 25.

In addition, fire personnel from the U.S. Forest Service and Priest Lake Idaho Department of Lands performed a fire safety presentation for the students.

During his visit, Smokey Bear gave the students packets with wildfire safety and educational materials. Poster contest winners were awarded certificates and prizes which are sponsored on a state, regional and national level by the National Garden Clubs and all first through fifth graders are welcome to enter.

Winners at district level are voted on in November and posters with the most votes advance to state level. Prizes are supported by the Moscow Idaho Garden Club, Bonner County Fire Prevention, U.S. Forest Service and the Idaho Department of Lands Priest Lake office.

This year second grader Tyne Tyre won first place at state level and advanced to the regional level, where she took third place for her grade. The region includes all of Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona and Idaho. Congratulations to Tyne and all the winners.
