SANDPOINT — A body was discovered Tuesday morning off the Statue of Liberty pier at Sandpoint City Beach.

The age and gender of the individual, as well as the name, were being withheld Tuesday pending notification of next of kin, said Capt. Tim Hemphill, Bonner County Sheriff's Office public information officer.

The incident was reported at 11:36 a.m. and the body was recovered by the BCSO dive team and BCSO detectives are conducting the investigation, Hemphill said.

Hemphill said the person was deceased when they were found and their body recovered from Lake Pend Oreille.

Additional information is expected to be released on Wednesday morning, Hemphill said.

"Part of the reason we're holding off is to get a sense of the bigger picture of what we're looking at," Hemphill said.

Sandpoint city lifeguards are not yet on duty at City Beach. Officials said previously that guards will begin work for the summer on June 11 and will be working at the beach through Labor Day.
