Sylvia H. Kappen, 52, passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Visitation for friends and family will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at the Lakeview Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11, at North Summit Church with a dessert reception to follow at Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Sylvia was born on October 26, 1969 in Pohnpei, Micronesia. After spending part of her youth on the island, her parents Merins and Joe Race moved her to the United States. After living in both Arizona and California, she graduated high school in La Grande, Oregon, in 1987, and attended Eastern Oregon University. She later moved to Issaquah, Washington, where Sylvia attended beauty school and soon after met her future husband, Kraig. They married on September 22, 1995, in Issaquah, before moving to Sandpoint in 1997.
Sylvia found great joy in being a teacher at Little Lamb’s Preschool for over 12 years. Her passion was working and inspiring children, and she was a mom to many. She was a member of Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and served as fellowship coordinator and was a member of the church council. She also took great pride in serving as team mom for Sandpoint football for eight years where she watched both her boys play. Her other sports passion was track and field, following son Braden’s career at both Sandpoint High and currently Southern Utah University.
She enjoyed cooking, organizing groups, family gatherings, helping local charities, cutting hair and working as a cart girl at the Idaho Club.
She is survived by her husband, Kraig Kappen of Sagle; two sons, Jeffrey Kappen of Post Falls and Braden Kappen of Sagle; parents, Merins and Joe Race; numerous siblings, including brothers Yoshi and Nobu, and sisters Kimi and Jovie; nieces, nephews, and many family members back in Pohnpei whom she always stayed in touch with and held dear to her heart.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Little Lamb’s Preschool, 1900 Pine St, Sandpoint, ID 83864 or to the Sandpoint Football Foundation, PO Box 106, Kootenai, ID 83840.
