100 Years Ago — 1922

Car turns acrobat

Mr. And Mrs. E. D. Williams motored to Spokane last week, returning Friday. On their way home their Ford turned turtle with them near Diamond Lake. Fortunately, neither one was injured except Mrs. Williams received slight bruises. After the Ford was placed in running condition, it brought them on to Priest River as if it had been built for acrobatic stunts.

90 Years Ago — 1932

Bonner Hardware robbed

The Bonner Hardway store was broken into Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Among the loot taken were three rifles, two six shooters, two flashlights and one-half dozen canvas gloves. The building was entered first through the rear and then by forcing a door.

80 Years Ago — 1942

Sugar rationing in effect

Beginning May 4, Priest River Grade School will join other elementary schools of the country in putting on a four-day registration program for the benefit of the sugar-consuming public. Every man, woman and child living at home is entitled to a war ration stamp book.

70 Years Ago — 1952

Spartans win track event

The Priest River Spartans ran up an easy track win over Newport and Cusick last Friday at home. Priest River scored 77, Cusick 43, and Newport 16. Alva Mullaley led the Spartans to the win by placing first in the 100-yard dash, pole vault and broad jump.

60 Years Ago — 1962

Progress made on new school

Construction of the four-unit elementary school located on Harriet Avenue is well under way. Total bid for the school was $55,518.

50 Years Ago — 1972

Dump replacement sought

City, county and state officials as well as representatives of the U. S. Forest Service continued probing this week for a solution to the solid waste disposal problems facing Bonner County. Priest River is one.

40 Years Ago — 1982

Town fights crime

A rash of burglaries in the Blanchard area has prompted area residents to organize a defense and take their own bite out of crime. Following numerous meetings, a block watch program materialized, and now large signs are posted along Highway 41 that warn, “If I don’t call the sheriff, my neighbor will.

30 Years Ago — 1992

Gregory suffers heart attack

Roger Gregory suffered a heart attack at his home Tuesday evening. He was driven to Newport by Kenneth Naccarato about 9:30 p.m. Emergency personnel, headed by Dr. Kersting, “literally saved my life,” Gregory said. He was airlifted to Sacred Heart by Heartflite, then went into cardiac arrest and nearly died again. He underwent a triple bypass and now feels “real good.” (Note: he is still with us.)
