Everyone wins for SHS tennis
The Sandpoint tennis team was one match away from sealing a 12-0 match victory over 4A Inland Empire League opponent Lakeland on Wednesday.
The shutout came down to Owen Larson and Aden Heitz at number two doubles.
The duo went up against Lakeland’s Ben Ryan and Logan Harris. Larson and Heitz sealed it In three sets, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6, notching the 12-0 shutout victory for the Bulldogs.
“This was one of the greatest matches I’ve ever seen,” Sandpoint tennis coach Kent Anderson said. “I’ve never seen a 12-0 score before, but you could just tell that they wanted it really bad.”
This win secured a 4A Inland Empire League championship for Sandpoint. The girls also remained undefeated as a team with a clean sweep over Lakeland.
“The girls are so tough,” Anderson said. “I knew they were going to be tough because everyone came back, but they really went above and beyond.”
Maile Evans and Patch Howard played at number one doubles for the second match in a row and once again came away with a victory.
The Sandpoint duo defeated Lakeland’s Addie Raebel and Ellie Carlson 6-4, 7-6, 6-3.
“Lakeland’s doubles team was extremely tough,” Anderson said. “(Maile) Evans and (Patch) Howard just found a way to win. They were like surgeons out there finding a way to win.”
Ellie Pincher, the number 10 player on Sandpoint’s tennis roster, got called up for the second match in a row.
She teamed up with Olivia Petruso at number two doubles. The duo cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
“When she comes in, she wins,” Anderson said. “She honestly might have the best record on our team. When she plays, she wins.”
Evan Wiley filled in at number one singles for the first time this season. He came away with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Freshman Matthew Norton, who usually plays number one singles, moved down to number two. He won his match 6-3, 6-1.
“His game is starting to come together,” Anderson said. “His stroke is so smooth in practice it's been hard for him to relax. He put it all together tonight, it was really fun to watch.”
Sandpoint will wrap up its regular season with a match against Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday, May 10.
