BOISE — Rusty Lee was like a bull in a record shop; he kept breaking records. The junior capped off his 2022 campaign by once again breaking his own record in the 110 meter hurdles at the Idaho Class 4A state track meet by posting a time of 14.18.

Lee also notched a fourth place finish in the high jump, clearing six feet.

He finished off his run at the state meet with a second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 39.20.

“(Rusty) was a busy man with six events between the finals and prelims,” Sandpoint track coach Matt Brass said. “He broke his 110 meter record twice and his 300-record once, and he went up against one of the best hurdlers in the country.”

Luke McCorkle finished sixth in the same event with a time of 40.74.

“He was hungry to get on the podium,” Brass said. “He’s always been a solid hurdler, but today he came out really focused and determined.”

Senior Will Hurst ended day one of the state track meet upset with his sixth place finish in the shot put event. Today, he earned a silver medal in the discus event with a throw of 158 feet and three inches.

“He threw 158 feet on his first throw,” Brass said. “He was calm and focused today. I was really impressed with how composed he was, like a champion.”

As for the girls, Maren Davidson earned a fifth place finish in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:18.22.

“She ran really boldly,” Brass said. “She ran the fastest first lap she has all season. She kept her composure and held it until the end of the race.”

The Bulldogs took 17 athletes to state and left with 16 medals. The boys finished in sixth place as a team and the girls finished ninth.

“We’re really impressed with how the kids conducted themselves,” Brass said. “I would consider this a pretty successful conclusion to the year.”
