Apprenticeship programs focus of NIC open house
The community is invited to learn more about the various apprenticeship programs offered through the North Idaho College Workforce Training Center at an Open House from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18 in Rathdrum.
There will be 18 local employers on-hand to meet with job seekers and potential apprentices. The NIC Workforce Training Center Apprenticeship Program Open House will be held at the NIC Parker Technical Education Center on Lancaster Road.
“If you’re looking for a job, or really, a career, this is a perfect opportunity to see what is available right here in North Idaho,” said Brenda Hamilton, NIC Workforce Training Center Apprenticeship Program manager.
NIC Workforce Training Center offers apprenticeships in HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Construction, Heavy Equipment, Medical Assistant, Dental Assistant and Certified Nursing Assistant. Apprenticeships allow employees to work while taking classes during their off-time. They earn while they learn.
“Currently, there’s funding available that will pay up to 90% of a program. Now is an incredible time for anyone who is ready to embark on a new career,” Hamilton said.
All the apprenticeships are eligible for Idaho Launch funding. The statewide funding program will cover up to $7,500 and is available to anyone who intends to work for an employer in Idaho.
Each apprenticeship is different. Some are four-year programs, while others last a few months. Many of the apprenticeships, such as newly created Construction and Heavy Equipment programs, will lead to a journeyman trade certificate. Journeymen typically have significantly higher salaries than non-certified employees.
The Nov. 18 open house is being held in conjunction with both the 85th anniversary of the National Apprenticeship Act and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Eighth Annual National Apprenticeship Week.
“Registered apprenticeship is a proven way to obtain pathways to secure, high-paying careers,” Hamilton said. “This open house will showcase what’s available in our region and how to pay for it. Everyone’s welcome — just show up.”
