100 Years Ago — 1922

Poor 'old summer seems to have grown tired of waiting for Jack Frost and is just dying a natural death. The meadows are turning brown and yellow, the leaves changing their hue, vines hanging limp and gaunt. And there seems to be a wistful tenderness in the atmosphere, a hush, a waiting, a silent goodbye.

90 Years Ago — 1932

Nordman notes

The government started work on the new road from Nordman to Reeder Bay on Priest Lake. That is as far as they will go this fall, but in time the road will be built to the Beaver Creek Ranger Station and then after some more time, it will be built around to the head of the little lake.

80 Years Ago — 1942

The following men from Priest River will leave Oct. 6 for the induction center at Fort Douglas, Utah: Harold Dew, Huston Carr, Clifford Bossio, Jens Knudson, Carl Veltri, Carl Evenson, Carl Hendrickson, Nelson Carver, Michael Winn, William Dodge, William Naccarato, Frank Zinser Jr., Clayton Stewart, and Jacob Keish.

70 Years Ago — 1952

Subscriptions for uniforms

A representative of the Curits Circulation Co. was at the high school Monday and gave the students a plan to raise funds for band uniforms. The students are selling magazine subscriptions for this fund.

60 Years Ago — 1962

Taverns help provide hot lunch

Pat Jasper, collection chairman for the Hot Lunch Program, reported $118.50, which had been collected in a novel fashion by Mr. and Mrs. Frank McGinnis, proprietors of Phil’s Club. The McGinnis’ have strips of dimes taped to the surface of the bar and patrons are invited to add their contributions. All taverns in town have been making collections in recent years to aid the Hot Lunch Program. The funds help pay for a “Type A” balanced meal and aid in cutting the cost down to 25 cents per meal.

50 Years Ago — 1972

PTA says thanks

A huge bouquet of thanks is due the men and women who turned out Saturday to help make the concrete slab for students at the elementary and junior high a reality. These people began their back-breaking work at 8 a.m. and many did not return to their homes until 2 a.m. the following morning.

40 Years Ago — 1982

“Li’l Abner” coming

Priest River Lamanna High School has begun production of its fall play, “Li’l Abner”, directed by Mark Caldwell and Jerry Lindquist.

30 Years Ago — 1992

Hoodoo Valley requests toll-free calling

A public hearing to consider the petition of Hoodoo Valley residents for toll-free calling will be held Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Edgewater Resort in Sandpoint.

20 Years Ago — 2002

Late Start for schools

Schools in West Bonner County School District No. 82 will start 30 minutes later on Tuesdays only. Buses will pick students up 30 minutes later than normal, and classes will start at 8:25 a.m. Teachers will arrive earlier to complete cooperative planning.
