Duane Merton Peterson, 91

| September 3, 2022 1:00 AM

Duane Merton Peterson, 91, passed away on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, at the Lakeview Funeral Home with a reception to follow at the VFW Hall.

Duane was born on April 14, 1931, in Sandpoint, one of nine children to Malon and Margaret Peterson. He was considered to be a man of a thousand stories.

As a child, Duane’s mother, Margaret said, “He was born running with a gun in his hand,” a statement that stayed true until the end. Duane’s stories often reflected on his time in the Army as a radio man during the Korean War, and working with the Forest Service, cruising timber.

On Nov. 6, 1955, Duane married his wife of 66 years, Alice Mae Sloan. They were married in Thompson Falls, Mont. They had three children, Dawn, Kathy and Brett.

Duane had a love for the outdoors, whether he was hiking, tending to his magnificent garden, or hunting and fishing with his family, you could always find him outside. When it was too cold to be out and about, you could always trust that Duane would be ready to stay indoors and entertain you with a story.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Peterson; daughters, Dawn (Dave) Smith, and Kathy (Gil) Robison; and son, Brett (Sally) Peterson; eight grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren; and sisters Jean Piehl of Sandpoint, and Marge (Jim) Holland of Pinehurst, Idaho.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mertys Spencer, Dee Kegley and Fay Harmon; brothers Chuck, Roland and Donald; granddaughter Holly Peterson; and great-grandson Chase Davis.

Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint is handling the arrangements. Please visit Duane’s online memorial at www.lakeviewfuneral.com and sign his guest book.
