PRIEST RIVER – The Spartans lost both games of a doubleheader versus Kellogg on Monday, April 17 at Priest River Junior High School. The Spartans lost the first game 27-5 and the second game 12-0.

Although the Spartans have struggled this season, head coach Mark Schlutz said he is proud how his team always plays until the last out.

“One thing I can say about this team is that they keep playing regardless of the score. I am very proud of how these young men fight and do not give up when outmatched,” Schultz said.

In Game 1, despite the lopsided score, the Spartans put up five runs, tied for their season-high, after being blanked in their last three games versus Orofino and Newport. Leading the way was Landon Reynolds who had a triple and a homerun in the contest. Reynolds amassed two runs scored, two hits, and four RBIs while also pitching a clean one-and-two-thirds innings on the mound.

Also recording multiple hits in Game 1 for the Spartans was Colton Brooks, Merrick Isenberger, and Logan Troumbly.

The biggest blemish for the Spartans was the top of the third inning when the Wildcats scored 19 runs. Catcher Luke Smith helped the Wildcats tremendously with four hits and five RBIs in just five at bats. Riply Luna was dominant on the mound going the full five innings and recording 11 strikeouts.

In Game 2, the Spartans could not get the bats going. The lone hit in the ball game came from Shayd Wong-Yuen who was able to notch a double.

Kellogg’s Kolby Luna was relentless on the mound giving up just one hit and three walks while striking out eight. He also contributed one hit and two RBI’s on the offensive end. Austin Clapper, Kellogg’s other catcher, led the way in Game 2 with three RBI’s. Travis Eixenberger recorded three singles as well.

The Spartans (0-10) will look for their first win of the season against Timberlake on Wednesday, March 19 at Timberlake Senior High School in Spirit Lake.
