Why are Festival at Sandpoint traditions disappearing?
Having attended the festival for 30-plus years as well as volunteering for 18 years, I was saddened that the board of directors has apparently decided to no longer have the American flag presented and the national anthem sung at the beginning of the shows.
Only in one of the three shows I attended was the national anthem sung, initiated by the opening act musician on their own. The other two just went directly to the performers. No longer does Bob Witte announce, "Will everyone please rise and remove their hats as the national anthem is played or sung?
For 39 years, that was a proud moment for Sandpoint and the Festival. One must assume the current board of directors no longer thinks showing pride in our community and country is important. What a great lesson to teach our guests, children, young folks, and those who have served our country.
