Thomas A. Hoisington, 75, lost his fight with ALS on Aug. 16, 2023.

Tom was born in Coffey, Missouri, on March 10, 1948. His family moved from Coffey to the Northwest, living in several areas around Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho, before finally settling in Washington.

He graduated from Freemont High School, lettering in football and baseball; and earned an associate degree in business from North Idaho College.

He worked for Pacific Trail, Serac, Pneumex and was a Bonner County juvenile detention officer until his retirement in 2013. He served as an Idaho Juvenile Justice Association delegate and was active in trying to improve issues related to juvenile justice.

Tom believed in the value of sports for young people he coached Babe Ruth leagues, soccer and worked to encourage youth bowling. Bowling was his passion; he went to the United States Bowling Congress national tournaments seven times. It was the highlight of his year, and was Washington State United States Bowling Congress delegate for two years.

He was preceded in death by his adopted father, Dan Hoisington; mother, Nellie Bonin; brothers, Don and John Hoisington. Thomas is survived by his wife, Tonnie Hoisington; sons Thomas Arlo Hoisington, Timothy Allen Hoisington and daughter Julia Tietjen; brothers Dan and Randy; sisters Ruth, Linda and Chris. He is also survived by his father, Richard Youngs; brother Danny Youngs; and sisters Rita Caldwell and Sharon Youngs. Tom was always grateful to Shirley Youngs for her role in uniting him with his Missouri family.

He looked forward to visits with his grandchildren and wanted to take them fishing, a pleasure he was never able to achieve. The deep sorrow and pain in our hearts that his family feels from his passing is evidence that he was a loving, giving and caring person.

A celebration of life will be held at Round Lake pavilion on Aug. 26, 2023, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wanda need not attend.
