A one-year-old Bonner County boy who was allegedly kidnapped by his non-custodial mother has been found safe and is being returned to his family, local law enforcement officials said Thursday.

On Aug. 12, the Sandpoint Police Department issued a release asking the public for help in locating the boy, Forrest Brubaker. The release stated they believed the boy to be with his mother, Laurel Hannah, who did not have legal custody of him; adding that they thought it likely she would be taking him to Washington or to Mexico.

A felony warrant was issued for Hannah.

On Wednesday, Sandpoint Police issued a joyous update to this case. Both Brubaker and Hannah were located in Costa Rica, neither with any injuries. Hannah was taken into custody, the update said, and Brubaker is being returned to his legal guardian.

“Sandpoint PD would like to thank our partners with the U.S. State Department, FBI, U.S. Marshals and Office of International Affairs,” the update said.
