SANDPOINT – The Sandpoint girls soccer team fell in a nail-biter to Lewiston, 3-2 at War Memorial Field on Saturday.
At halftime, the Bengals led 1-0, but Sandpoint’s Aliya Strock would score on a pass from Lilliana Brinkmeier within the first two minutes of the second half to tie things up, 1-1. It’s now the third consecutive game Strock has recorded a goal.
Lewiston would then score two consecutive goals around the 60th minute mark to make the score 3-1. Sandpoint continued to fight, playing a lot of the last 20 minutes in Bengal territory. Sandpoint’s Mya Vorhies would score late in the contest, but the Bulldogs ran out of time, falling 3-2.
“We allowed too many through balls, made too many mistakes, and didn’t finish our chances,” head coach Conor Baranski said. “We lacked the grit and aggression that got us our win over Lake City. It wasn’t until the last 10 minutes until we really kicked it into high gear today.”
Despite the loss, Baranski said Kenzie Mitchell and Strock worked hard all game long and deserve praise for their efforts on Saturday.
Sandpoint (2-1) will face Moscow at home on Wednesday.
