SANDPOINT — Music in the Lobby, a new tradition at the Sandpoint Library, kicked off Monday with festive tunes from a local children’s choir and music class.

“Puff the Magic Dragon'' and “Joy to the World'' were just a few of the songs performed by Bella Noté Music Studio’s children's choir and ukulele class.

Each week during the month of December, different local musicians or music groups will take a turn filling the library with the Christmas spirit for “Music in the Lobby.” Each performer will play sometime between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on their scheduled day.

Other performers in upcoming weeks include the Sandpoint High School Choir carolers; library employee Billy Bledsoe; high school jazz band combo, The Accidentals; Suzuki Strings Choir; Old Time Fiddlers; Desire Aguirre and Noelle Argue’s violin students.

While the library has welcomed performers in the past, this is the inaugural year of Music in the Lobby, Suzanne Davis, youth services librarian, said.

With family gatherings and social impacts, this season can place added anxiety in children’s lives, Davis said. Some are meeting a parent’s new significant other for the first time, others are struggling with family dynamics.  With many children visiting the library after school, Davis thought it was the perfect opportunity to soothe the impacts of stress the holidays sometimes bring.

Those interested in performing can contact Davis at the Sandpoint Library. Even if they run out of space for Christmastime, she said there will likely be future opportunities.

As of Tuesday, Music in the Lobby performances are set to take place Dec. 4-6, 11, 13, 14, 18-21 at the library, 1407 Cedar St.
