The cure for hate speech is more, better speech
It seemed important in the article "United Against Hate" that we stand united against this negative emotion.
Yet, there was no mention of a hate crime having been committed here, and this meeting was sponsored by a U.S. Attorney and the FBI. In my 67 years, the best remedy for hate, or a communication from anyone who is being hateful, is to have a discussion with that person. Hate is only an emotion.
Unfortunately, too many people act upon their emotion only and do not use reason. Reason is what differentiates us from the other animals and is necessary for civilization to exist. Hate speech sounds like something very bad, yet a topic considered mildly controversial now, could be considered "hate speech" someday in the future.
Have we run out of acceptable new paradigms? Why aren't federal officials recommending the use of reasoned dialog? Just have a good chat with the guy and find out what his issues are, and go from there.
The cure for hate speech is more speech and better speech, not intimidation by federal officials. Freedom of speech is not only for being agreeable. Having a lively disagreement is required for freedom. Words are not violence.
