SANDPOINT — As part of a new program, local authors will be telling stories under the night sky while children gather around a campfire in a Sandpoint park as the smell of gooey marshmallows and toasted graham crackers set the scene.

The program, “Stories & S’mores,” is put on by Sandpoint Parks and Recreation, the Bonner County Historical Society, and the East Bonner County Library District. Each month, a different local author will tell stories at a different featured park. Meanwhile, a toasty campfire will be blazing for kids and parents who want to partake in some s’mores.

In November, local author Sandy Compton told stories at Hickory Park for the first Stories & S’mores. Kami Omodt, with Sandpoint Parks and Recreation, said the event was well received with about 20 people attending.

The Parks and Rec Department has also secured authors and parks for designated dates during the rest of winter. On Dec. 15, local author, illustrator, and musician Matt Lome will be at Lakeview Park from 6-7 p.m. January’s featured author, Waldorf teacher Julie McCallon, will be telling stories at Great Northern park Jan. 19 at the same time. The last scheduled Stories & S’mores will be Feb. 16 at Farmin Park and feature local authors Pam Webb and Paul Graves.
