BOYS

Genesis Prep 54, Clark Fork 46

CLARK FORK — It was a battle until the very end, but Genesis Prep prevailed during the last couple minutes of play to defeat Clark Fork, 54-46 in a non-league matchup Tuesday.

With 1:46 remaining in the fourth, Clark Fork found themselves trailing by 8 points. After a couple of quick baskets, which included a three-pointer by senior Seth Caven, the Wampus Cats pulled back within three points. However, the Jaguars hit the majority of their free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

“It’s the first time that we played four quarters, and I’m proud of that,” head coach Heath Beason said. “We had a lot of turnovers that we need to correct, but we played four tough quarters. We couldn’t go into a press at the end because (Genesis Prep) can handle the ball well, and we knew they were good outside shooters. We couldn’t adjust fast enough because of that.”

Going into halftime, Beason said the team was confident where they were at, trailing by just three, but just couldn’t put the pieces together near the end of the game.

“I think our nerves got to us — in terms of excitement,” Beason said. “We just needed to be a little more patient, calm ourselves down, and look for the open shot. The final score does not reflect how close the game was tonight; we had to foul even though we knew they were a good free throw shooting team … we just made some bad decisions tonight which made it an uphill battle.”

Chase Sanroman scored a team-high 12 points and had three steals for the Wampus Cats. Clark Fork shot 10-for-26 from the free throw line on the night; Genesis Prep was 10-for-12.

GIRLS

Lake City 71, Sandpoint 39

COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint freshman Jordyn Tomco led Sandpoint with 15 points in Tuesday’s 71-39 loss to Lake City.

“Tough first half for us; Lake City played really really well,” head coach Will Love said. “They were able to get to the basket … we had a hard time stopping them. On the offensive end, we had good looks early on but couldn’t get them to fall, and so that momentum just kept building for Lake City.”

Love said it’s a game the team is going to learn from and that the girls will continue to work hard and look at what needs to be done to get to the level that Lake City is on.

Sandpoint (5-1, 2-1) will host last year’s 3A state runner-up, Timberlake, at home Thursday.

Bonners Ferry 80, Clark Fork 25

BONNERS FERRY — The Wampus Cats fell to a tough 3A Badgers squad, 80-25 in a non-league matchup Tuesday.

“We obviously did not show up to beat Bonners Ferry,” head coach Jordan Adams said. “They are a few leagues ahead of us, and have some excellent athletes. We did however [put] up some really good fundamental shots and [got] good looks.”

Adams said the team played the best they have all season in the first half Tuesday. Although a lopsided score, she said the team did well enough to the point where they were able to walk out of the gym with their heads up.

Adams said Piper Scarlett, who had five points for the Wampus Cats, made some big plays and that Eloise Shelton, who had seven points, played excellent defense.

Clark Fork (1-5) will take on Mullan at home on Thursday.
