Independence Junior Race Series returns in 2024
The Independence Race Team, a youth ski team made up of athletes aged six to 14 who race at Schweitzer, has announced their Junior Race Series schedule for this ski season.
The team, which provides a low cost racing opportunity for both new and experienced racers, will meet every Friday in January (5, 12, 19, and 26). On the 5th, check-in will be 5:00 p.m. at the Selkirk Lodge. Check-in will be 5:30 at the clock tower the following three Fridays.
The first day will be a coached, 'learn to race' clinic followed by timed runs through the NASTAR course. The following three Friday evenings will center on the race course, along with extra coaching. The coaches are volunteers and are either local racing standouts or certified coaches for select area teams.
Members are responsible for lift tickets/season passes, ski gear, and race entry fees. Discounted tickets can be found under Schweitzer's Twilight Skiing program. There are no charges for coaching, use of equipment or insurance.
Organizers said the ultimate goal is to have fun and make friends. However, at the end of the season each member of the winning team will receive a medal for their efforts. All participants will receive a T-shirt and raffle prize at the all-you-can-eat ice cream party after the final race of the season.
Registration costs $45 ($35 if you have NASTAR season pass) and is limited to 80 kids. Registration forms are available at the Alpine Shop located at 213 Church Street in Sandpoint, or at your local school district. This year, registration is available online at www.independenceracing.com. All entries must be received by Jan. 1. Registration forms can be sent to the following mailing address: Junior Race Series, c/o Doug Johnston, 564 Quail Loop, Newport, WA 99156.
