PREP WRESTLING: Bonner County wrestlers among some of the top at Tri-State

COEUR d’ALENE – Priest River’s Colm McLaimtaig (138) placed fourth at the prestigious Tri-State wrestling tournament held at North Idaho College this past Friday and Saturday. He was the highest placer from Bonner County at the event.

On the weekend, McLaimtaig went 5-2 with three pins and had two victories via injury default. After two pins on opening day, he also pinned Logan Bradley of Coeur d’Alene (0:40) en route to the third-fourth place match.

Also in the 138-pound bracket was Sandpoint’s Shane Sherrill who finished fifth overall. Sherrill went 6-2 with one pin, three wins via decision (one major), one by technical fall, and won the fifth-place match via injury default. After going 3-1 on opening day, he defeated Lawrence Muhat of Lake Stevens via decision (10-6) and Jayson Bonnett of Mt. Spokane via decision (4-2).

Sandpoint’s Jorden Tyler (195), after falling to Garrett Leonard of Lake City via decision (4-3) in his opening match, made his way to a seventh-place finish after winning four of his five matches in the consolation bracket. Three of those four wins were via pin: Miguel Zunigam, Othello (1:09); Bridger Cloninger, Lewis and Clark (1:53); and Conner Kline, Reardan (1:18); the other came via technical fall over Pablo Lara of Chiawana (4:00, 16-0). He went 5-2 on the weekend.

Sandpoint finished 38th (46) and Priest River 42nd (41) out of 68 total teams. Bishop Kelly won the event with 218 points; Post Falls was third with 209.

Sandpoint and Priest River will dual on Monday at Sandpoint High.
