 HUDON LONGTIME ST. JOSEPH’S MEMBER

Leon Hudon believes he has belonged to the Catholic church here longer than any other member.  Born in 1888, he came to Sandpoint in 1907 from White Earth, Minn. When he first arrived, there were three brickyards within a mile or so of Sandpoint. Leon worked in them all, but particularly remembers [Pete] LaFond’s brickyard where they made the bricks for the present St. Joseph’s Catholic Church building [Sixth & Oak; in 2023, the Heartwood Center]. Work on the building began in 1907 and Leon says he’s the fellow who blasted stumps and cleared the ground around the church. He recalls that the church was then heated by a furnace made of two barrels, stoked with wood and coal, located in a semi-basement dug under the building.
