Wendell Brian Calkins, 62

| December 20, 2023 1:00 AM

Wendell was born July 4, 1961, in Great Falls, Mont., to Willard and Jean Calkins. Being born on the nation’s birthday when everyone was celebrating made him a fun lover from a very young age.

The family moved to Sandpoint when Wendell was three years old. He lived his whole life in Sandpoint, never straying far from what he loved so much — Bonner County’s mountains, lakes and open spaces! Wendell had the uncanny knack of catching larger fish than his buddies and generally enjoying good luck in many ways.

After Wendell graduated from Sandpoint High School, he went to work for Spring’s Cut Shop for a short time before he found his forever job with Idaho Wood Industries, where he would work for 35 years. He became a master craftsman and his work was much appreciated by the Lewis family at Idaho Wood, who considered him part of their family.

Wendell enjoyed the seasons of North Idaho, but he did not care for shoveling snow, mowing lawns or raking leaves. While he did enjoy gardening and raising tomatoes — his preference was his favorite 75 degrees. He had a dry and witty sense of humor. He was well informed on so many levels because he loved to read. The daily newspaper was never missed and read cover to cover. He might have seemed quite reserved, but he wasn’t missing a thing being said.

Wendell could be generous and thoughtful to those close to him and was a great cook. He formed life long friendships from a young age, including his pal, Joe, who named his favorite dog, Wendell. His special buddies were his fishing buddies, especially Chris and Bob!

Wendell was preceded in death by both of his parents, his uncle, Burt Calkins; and infant nephew, John Douglas Anderson. He leaves behind three older siblings, Cynthia Tylman, Jennifer Anderson and Mark Calkins. He is survived by his uncle, Kurt Calkins; his cousins, Craig, Cordell and Timothy Calkins; his nieces, Rachel Brandon, Katelin Anderson and Kendra Calkins; a nephew, Austin Anderson; and a great-niece, Leah Brandon.

Wendell Calkins will be missed by those who knew him. A celebration of life is pending for a later date.

Donations in Wendell’s memory may be made to Toys for Tots, Bonner Homeless Transitions or Bonner Gospel Mission.
