PREP BASKETBALL: Sandpoint girls open Holiday Shootout with win over Madison

IDAHO FALLS — Four different Bulldogs reached double-figures in Sandpoint’s 49-42 win over Madison in the opening round of the East Idaho Holiday Shootout Tournament held at Skyline High on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs started out slow but rallied for 32 of their 49 points in the second half to overcome the Bobcats, who fell to 8-3 on the season after the being defeated by Sandpoint.
“We played every quarter well, except the second,” head coach Will Love said. “We really struggled to move the basketball against their zone.”
After some halftime adjustments, Sandpoint got back on track and dominated in the latter half of the contest.
“I am really pleased with how we played tonight, especially after the long bus ride,” Love said. “Putting up 32 in the second half against a team like Madison is not easy.”
Karlie Banks returned to action and scored a team-high 14 points for the Bulldogs. Brecken Mire added 13; Aliya Strock had eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter. Jordyn Tomco rounded out the scoring on the night with 10.
Sandpoint (10-1, 3-0) will face Snake River in the second round of the tournament today.

VANCOUVER — Sandpoint battled hard but fell just short of Juanita (Wash.) in Thursday’s Fort Vancouver Holiday Tournament opener held at Fort Vancouver High.
“Despite losing, I think we played pretty well tonight,” head coach Brian Childs said. “We played against a bigger, more physical team and we adjusted and held our own.”
The Ravens went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter, and an 8-0 run in the third, which was the difference maker in the contest.
“Runs like those are hard to overcome,” Childs said. “We played and competed well. Everyone made a contribution, our scoring was balanced, and that’s how we are when we’re playing our best. It was just a few plays here and there that made the difference.”
Parker Childs scored a team-high 13 points while Emerik Jones added 11 for the Bulldogs. Junior Wil Leisy scored a season-high 10 points on the night.
Sandpoint (4-5, 0-0) will play the winner of Heritage/Kingston in the second round of the tournament today.
