Robert (Bob) Rutherford, 78

| December 30, 2023 1:00 AM

On Dec. 6, 2023, we lost our loving husband, father, and grandfather. Bob passed away peacefully at home after succumbing to brain cancer.

Bob was the oldest of three children, born and raised in St. Helena, Calif., where he excelled both athletically and academically in school. Following two years of college, and after his combat service as a United States Marine, which included over 18 months in Vietnam, he attended Humboldt State College and graduated with honors and a bachelor of science degree in economics. He later obtained his master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Golden Gate University. Bob was also a life member of the Mensa Society.

While in college, Bob met his future wife and life partner, Linda. They moved to Davis, Calif., and raised their two sons, Jeff and Eric. He retired from a senior management position with the State of California after over 30 years of service. With their boys grown up and starting their own families and careers, Bob and Linda moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, to be closer to nature on their 10 wooded acres.

They lived their retirement dream happily for 16 years. Bob was actively involved in the Marine Corps League and the other veterans groups in Sandpoint. He enjoyed helping others, fishing, golf, and working on forestry projects on his property. Always giving and generous, he was admired and sought out by friends and family for his advice, intellect, wisdom and fierce loyalty. In 2016, Bob and Linda moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Bob is survived by his wife, Linda; and sons, Jeff and Eric; five grandchildren; and his sister, Patricia.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis, and his parents.

There will be a memorial get-together for family and friends to honor and remember Bob at a later date.

Yates Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
