Feb. 2, 1973 – LANDFILL PROTEST

The Panhandle Health District solid-waste informational meeting on a proposed sanitary landfill site in the Colburn area became a noisy protest session. Some protestors appeared to believe they were attending a public hearing and the meeting rapidly degenerated into a verbal free-for-all, with most of the facts presented by officials ignored or lost in the shuffle. Protests focused on fears of possible water contamination, litter, insect attraction, and odors. Almost without exception, statements of protest ignored PHD’s explanation of how sanitary landfills are designed to avoid such conditions. All of Bonner County has for some time been in violation of federal and state laws concerning health and environmental standards, with unsightly, unsanitary open dumps scattered across the county.

GROUNDHOG DRAGS HIS SHADOW

Bre’r Groundhog was a disappointment to residents of this section when he came out of his subterranean quarters this morning with his shadow dragging behind him. The prophets claim it means six more weeks of winter, whereas, had he left his shadow at home, there would surely be but four more weeks. Starting at 1 below this morning, the air warmed up rapidly under the brightest sun of many days and the day has been clear.

MERCURY SINKS IN TUBE; HITS 11 BELOW

For the past several days, Sandpoint has been in the grip of the winter’s second severe cold snap, with temperatures of 9 below Tuesday morning, 2 above Wednesday, 11 below Thursday, and 1 below today. The cold was preceded by snowfall Saturday, with more on Tuesday and Wednesday. Winds Sunday night, Monday, and Tuesday, drifted the fresh snowfall to a considerable extent. The steamer Northern, which was blocked out of the harbor here from Dec. 8 to Jan. 8, was again blocked out Tuesday and has not made the city dock here since.
