Top finishes at the North Idaho Junior Olympic Rifle Championship
Shooters from the Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene clubs were represented at the North Idaho Junior Olympic Rifle Championship over the weekend of Jan. 21, 2023.
The shooters competed indoors with single-shot .22 caliber rifles using iron sights at a distance of 50 feet and completed 20 shots in the kneeling, prone and standing positions.
To score a 10, a shooter must take out a dot not much bigger than the period at the end of this sentence.
Ellie Rutherford, of the KV team, shot in the 18– to 21-year-old category and was the North Idaho champion. Rutherford averaged a score of 8.9 per shot and had a total score of 535 out of the 600 points possible.
Meggie Kahanek, also representing the KV team, was tops in the 15– to 17-year-old category, averaging a score of 8.3 per shot and a total score of 499.
Close behind was Gabriel Lester, of Sandpoint Jr. Rifle Club, with a score of 492. Lester was also top male shooter in the state and will receive an invitation to compete at the Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center.
Representing the KV Club, Salix Harris and Kyalynn Comer would take the top two places in the under-15-year-old category. Harris took first with a score of 491 and Comer placed second with 452.
After scores were combined, Elija Spencer won top shooter in Idaho averaging 9.5 points per shot and a final score of 572. Spencer also received an invitation to compete in Colorado Springs.
The teams will finish up their season with matches at the rifle ranges in Bonners Ferry, Spokane, Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint.
