Committee hosting garden start class

| February 15, 2023 1:00 AM

The Newport Community Garden Committee is getting excited for spring because, despite it being only February, it is time to get garden starts going indoors.

To get the community excited for the growing season as well, the committee is hosting a free, informal class this month on Raising starts from seeds. Kamori Cattadoris, Master Gardener and Secretary of the Friends of the Library, will be providing information and answering questions about starting your own garden plants from seeds.

Whether you are new to vegetable gardening or just looking for tips and tricks, this talk will focus on the three main principles you need to know to raise your own starts with confidence: considerations for purchasing seeds; optimum times to start various crops, and caring for your plants indoors until you can transplant them outside.

The program will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the Newport Public Library, 116 S Washington Ave. Reservations are required for the class by going to the Library’s event calendar at www.pocld.org. If you need assistance registering, please contact the Library at 800-366-3654.

The garden is a collaborative project between members of the Pend Oreille County Library District, Friends of the Pend Oreille County Library District, the local WSU Extension and Master Gardeners, SNAP-Ed, and the Pend Oreille Conservation District. Funding has been provided through grants from SNAP-Ed, the Innovia Foundation, Catholic Charities, and an Urban Agriculture Conservation Grant through the National Association of Conservation Districts, as well as fundraising efforts by the Friends of the Library.
