Bulldogs have good first day at state wrestling

It was a good first day for the Bulldogs as the state wrestling tournament kicked off Thursday.

With nine total wrestlers, seven on the boys team and two on the girls, boys coach Doug Fry said the team had a good first day and sits in seventh place with three wrestling competing in the semi-finals on Friday.

"We did really well today," Fry said.

Aidan Rork (106) lost in his opening match by technical fall to Saxton Scott (Bonneville), 20-5. He will wrestle Kiezer Beech (Pocatello) today.

Andrew Duke (106) won by fall over Dylan Dottaviano (Bishop Kelly) 11-0 but lost his second in a tough match Gabe Rosales (Mountain Home) 15-0. While he is slated to wrestle today, his opponent has not yet been determined.

Ashlei Hawkins (126) won both of his matches to reach today's semi-final match. In the first, Hawkins won by decision Jett Mechling (Pocatello) 7-0; and in the second, he won by decision over Kelvin Martin Gomez (Caldwell) 6-2. Hawkins will take on Matthew Martino (Bishop Kelly) in today's semi-final match.

Shane Sherrill (138) will wrestle in today's semi-final match against Manuel Valdez (Bishop Kelly). To reach the semi-final, Sherrill won by fall over Roan Ricknor (Century) 18-11, in his opening match and won by decision over Tavin Rigby (Preston) 10-9 in a hard-fought second match.

Christian Troumbley-Karkoski (145) won his opening match by decision over Koby Gould (Bonneville) 2-1. However, Troumbley-Karkoski lost his second match by decision to Carlos Valdez (Bishop Kelly), 7-1. He is slated to wrestle through Friday and still has a chance to place, Fry said.

Calvin Hinds (182) won one and lost one on the tournament's opening day, winning by fall over Crew Nelson (Bishop Kelly) 8-3 in his first match. However, he lost 18-2 to Spencer Pease (Minico) by technical fall in the second. His opponent for Friday has not yet been determined.

At 195, Jorden Tyler won by fall over Henry Hester of Emmett in the first period to win, 2-0. In his second match, Tyler won by major decision over Wesley Hodges, 11-3 to set the stage for today's semi-final match against Gavin Williamson of Jerome.

William Bomba (220) lost by fall 4-1 in his opening match to Marcos Ozuna of Jerome. He is scheduled to take on Troy Olmos of Columbia today.

Gavin Walters (285) won by fall over Daniel Larios (Minico) 7-1 in his opening match but lost by fall to Brendan Rasmussen of Idaho Falls, 2-0. His opponent for Friday has not yet been determined.

In the girls tournament, Lilli Marti (235) won by decision over Alexandra Wright of Emmett 8-6 in her opening match, but lost to Ammi Hartman of Mountain Home 2-0 in the quarterfinal. Her opponent for Friday has not been determined.

Also wrestling for Sandpoint is Grace Balch (235) who won by fall over Cameron Spicer of Rocky Mountain 2-0 in her opening match. However, she lost in the quarterfinal to Kihnamy Walter of Canyon Ridge, 3-0. Her opponent for Friday has not yet been determined.
