The God of 'More than Enough'

| February 24, 2023 1:00 AM

God’s nature and character are revealed to us in His Word (the Bible) and through His actions in ours and others lives.

One of the ways God reveals part of Himself is via a name. One of the names God gives Himself is El Shaddai (Genesis 17:1). “El” means “God” and “Shaddai” has been translated as “Almighty” or “All-Sufficient." Thus, He is “God Almighty” or “The All-Sufficient God." The idea is that God’s power and provision is “more than enough” to meet any need. There is nothing too difficult for Him to accomplish.

An account of one of the needs God meets in this way is found in Luke 9:10-17. Jesus had been healing and teaching a crowd of over 5,000 people. In was late in the afternoon and Jesus tells His disciples to give the people something to eat. All they had were five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus breaks and gives thanks for these items and then has His disciples distribute them to the people. In the end, the people had more than enough to eat and there were twelve basketfuls of leftovers. As the food was being distributed, God miraculously multiplied what they had.

In our journey with God, we learn of His promises to all believers in His Word and His specific promises to us as we pursue an intimate relationship with Him. These promises are beyond our ability to achieve. We do have to do our part. We need to surrender, obey and be faithful to His leading in our lives. But, in the end, the only way those promises will be realized is by God doing only what He can do. God is not only faithful to those who are faithful, He does the impossible and He does so with overflowing, extravagant abundance.

And all these blessings shall come upon and overtake you because you obey the voice of the Lord your God. (Deuteronomy. 28:2, ESV)

"Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it." (Malachi 3:10, NIV)
