Rally car legend killed in snowmobile accident
Action sports super star Ken Block was involved in a fatal snowmobile accident near his Woodland, Utah, ranch on Jan. 2, 2023.
Block was snowmobiling near his home in the afternoon when he tried navigating up a steep pitch. The snowmobile fell back on top of him and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office.
Block was a pro rally car driver and action sports enthusiast who co-founded the skate brand DC Shoes and later, Hoonigan Racing. Within the community, Block was famous for his Gymkhana YouTube videos which feature him stunt driving and drifting all over the world in an artistic fashion. His Hoonigan YouTube channel has become the most popular channel in motorsport with over 1 billion views and has influenced other action sport stars like Travis Pastrana to join Hoonigan.
From 2006 to 2015, Block raced competitively in Rallycross at the X Games. He was a three-time runner up and five-time podium placer. Block also competed at the Global RallyCross Championships from 2011 to 2015 where he collected six wins and 15 podiums.
With over eight million Instagram followers, Block was an ambassador for the motorsport industry and one of the key leaders in growing its popularity in the U.S.
In 2022, Block raced alongside his wife, Lucy, and their 16-year-old daughter, Lia, in the American Rally Association Championship.
Block is survived by his three kids and his wife Lucy.
