Jan. 8, 1973 – POST-HOLIDAY RECITAL
A post-holiday recital was held by adult pupils of Mrs. Ruth Adams at her home. Games of a musical nature were enjoyed. Playing were Mrs. Linda Mott, Mrs. Helen Thompson and Mrs. Daylan Marley.

GROUSE CREEK NEWS
Fifteen who turned out for the Dec. 23 Pack River Grange meeting found an unpleasant surprise at the hall. The oil stove was left on pilot and vibrations from passing trains caused the motor to blow up and soot covered everything. The meeting was held after a cleanup. Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Dawson became new members. A roof repair job is scheduled soon.

METHODISTS HOST WATCH NIGHT SERVICE
United Methodist and First Presbyterian churches joined for a Watch Night Service New Years Eve at the Methodist Church hall, spending the eve in fellowship, games and singing, with lunch served throughout. Communion at the evening’s close was self-service, the elements having been dedicated earlier. Families paused for their own private communion before leaving to start a new year.

ENJOY FAMILY DINNER
The Hardin Dockins home was the scene of a gay party, when children and grandchildren gathered for Christmas eve dinner: Mr. and Mrs. Dick Sherwood, Julie and Wayne; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rice, Rusty and Ben; Mr. and Mrs. Pete Dockins and Brian; Sam Dockins and Kelly, Scott and Kathy Dockins.

Jan. 8, 1923 – DEC. PRECIPITATION HIGH
The closing days of December, 1922 put the month’s total precipitation at 8.06 inches, a figure second only to Dec. 1917, which had 9.52 inches. Last week’s temperatures ranged from 25 above to 40; New Years day was the warmest with 40. There was .03 inches of rain Jan. 1 (Monday), three inches of snow Tuesday, 1.01 inches of rain Wednesday and five inches of snow Thursday.

NEW MANAGERS TAKE CHARGE OF HOTEL
C.B. Brown, assisted by E.I. Firth, both of Spokane, took over the Hotel Idaho (320 Cedar) on New Years day and at once began improvements to make the hostelry one of the best equipped hotels to be found in a city of this size. The hotel’s name has been changed and it is now called Hotel Ponderay.

NEWS FROM COLBURN
A jolly crowd assembled at the hall Sunday night to watch the old year die and greet the new year. Taffy pulling and cards furnished entertainment until 12 o'clock, followed by two hours of dancing.
F. Von Shritz and family and Miss Helen Bandy motored to Sandpoint Thursday, their car being the first one over the road since the deep snow.
Miss Vernice Oliver returned to Sandpoint, where she attends high school. (Note: Vernice, later Mrs. Glen Stradley, was Colburn postmistress 37 years).
