Marvin Kirking, 95
Marvin Norris Kirking, 95, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, in Spokane, Wash.
Memorial service will be held Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Sandpoint.
Marvin was born Jan. 18, 1927, in Belfield, N.D., to Henry and Cornelia Kirking. He moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, at age 9 and graduated from CHS in 1945. He then served his country in Germany with the United States Army.
Marvin married Dagmar Haugness on Nov. 15, 1952, in Sandpoint. They made their home in Sagle from 1961 to 2005 and in Sandpoint thereafter.
He worked for McFarland Cascade Pole Co. as their shipping and receiving clerk as well as sales until his retirement in 1989.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church and a past Rotarian. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He built beautiful furniture and other items for his kids and grandkids that are keepsakes. He and Dagmar loved to camp. Their favorite spots were the Yaak River and Farragut State Park. He most enjoyed spending time with his family. There was a lot of food, games and much laughter whenever we were all together. He was a dedicated Mariners fan. He will be remembered mostly for being a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He deeply missed Dagmar after her passing.
He had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He was such a great role model in many ways, one of which being his love for helping others. He used his skills, talents and time to help people in need, including family members, neighbors and friends. He always had his tool bucket in the car in case there was a need. This included helping at the church. From cooking Easter breakfast to cutting, hauling and decorating the large Christmas trees with a few other men and everything in between. His fingerprints are all over First Lutheran Church and he was very involved with the original construction in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
He is survived by his three children; Matt (Donna) Kirking of El Sobrante, Calif., Brett (Pam) Kirking of Athol, and Jill (Mick) Lee of Spokane; four grandchildren, Jordan (Katlyn) Lee, Bryan (Courtnee) Lee, Madison Kirking and Amandalyn Kirking; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt Lee, Luna Lee and Malia Lee; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dagmar, sisters Myra Hathaway and Geneva Kirking, brothers Orville Kirking, Hilbert Kirking and Kenneth Kirking.
