| January 27, 2023 1:00 AM

Phyllis Elaine Nelson Meagher, 91, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sandpoint with Pastor Andy Kennaly officiating. A dessert reception will follow. Phyllis will be laid to rest at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery with her late husband, John Meagher.

Phyllis was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Duluth, Minn., to Otto and Rose Hoeft. She grew up and attended schools in Duluth. She married David Nelson in November 1950. Dave’s Naval career took them all over the United States.

They started a family in Key West, Fla., with a stop in Norfolk, Va., before settling in Pomona, Calif. Here she worked for Continental Bakery before moving to Honolulu, where she managed an H&R Block office. She then worked as ASB secretary at Fallbrook Union High School. It was in Fallbrook, Calif., that she and Dave divorced.

Phyllis met John Meagher in San Marcus, Calif., and they married Jan. 17, 1981. They retired and traveled the U.S. in their fifth-wheel trailer for four years before settling in Sagle, Idaho, in 1985.

Phyllis is a member of P.E.O. Chapter CA and the First Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. Throughout her life, she enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, fishing, raising animals, playing games, playing the piano and attending women’s Bible study, but she especially enjoyed desserts.

She is survived by her five children, Midge Nelson Thomas of Fallbrook, Calif., Dave (Gayle) Nelson Sagle, Idaho, Larry (Robyn) Nelson of Menifee, Calif., Gary (Kellie) Nelson of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and Ellie Godin of New York; 25 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband John Meagher.
