SHS students honored for academic achievements
A number of Sandpoint High School students have been recognized for their academic achievements by the Sandpoint Elks as the organization's students of the month for December and January.
Those honored in December are Ayiana Prevost and Alex Manning. Those honored for January are Avery Edmundson, Erika Edmundson and Parker Pettit.
To be selected as an Elks student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.
The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.
Sandpoint Elks Lodge awards thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received additional money in state and national Elks scholarships. The Elks are the third-largest awarder of scholarships in the county and several students have received large scholarships from the state and national level of Elks.
The daughter of Vince and Julia Prevost, Ayiana Prevost was named a student of the month by the Elks for the month of December.
Ayiana Prevost is a senior at Sandpoint High School and a competitive swimmer. She is ranked third in her class with a weighted GPA of 4.36, and plans on going to college to study engineering or computer science.
Alex Manning, son of Charles and Kimberly Manning, was named Elks student of the month for December.
Alex Manning is the student body president at Sandpoint High School. He is involved in many school activities led by the student council, including fundraisers, dances, local appreciation campaigns and more.
In addition to the ASB office, Alex enjoys being with his family and friends, traveling to see new places and meeting people. He has been involved in extracurricular sports such as golf and football. During the summer, he works as site manager at The Festival at Sandpoint.
With a GPA of 3.87 and ranked 63 in his class, He plans to attend Liberty University in the fall of 2023 to pursue a degree in government politics and policy.
The daughter of Jill and Mark Edmundson, Avery Edmundson was named an Elks student of the month for January.
Avery Edmundson is a senior at Sandpoint High School, where she participates in the health occupations program. As part of this program, she is working toward her certified nurses assistant certificate, is a member of the HOSA-Future Health Professionals student organization and is on the SHS Code team, which responds to student medical issues at school. She also has her Wilderness First Aid certificate.
Avery Edmundson participated as a pole vaulter on the SHS track team for two years. Avery was also an alpine ski racer from age 7 to 17 and dedicated her winter weekends to training, racing and fundraising for her nonprofit ski team. During that time, she earned a spot on the Pacific Northwest Ski Association's honor roll for maintaining a high GPA while being a ski racer in her high school years. She enjoys spending time with her friends and loves dogs.
During the first semester of her junior year, she attended a cultural exchange program, which focused on leadership and outdoor adventure. As part of this high school semester program, she traveled to Chile, where she backpacked and kayaked in and around Patagonia National Park.
Avery has a weighted GPA of 4.103. She has always had a strong interest in pursuing a career in the medical field. She plans to attend college to pursue a degree in nursing or biology.
The daughter of Jill and Mark Edmundson, Erika Edmundson was named an Elks student of the month for January.
Erika Edmundson is a senior at Sandpoint High School, where she is also a member of the SHS track team. She earned her SHS varsity letter sophomore and junior years and a nomination to the North Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame for her performance as a pole vaulter.
Erika Edmundson was also a competitive alpine ski racer starting at age 7 through her junior year. In 2019, she was selected to represent the Pacific Northwest division at the Western Regional ski race based upon her slalom ski racing standings. She was on the PNSA honor roll for maintaining a good GPA while being a ski racer in her high school years.
She enjoys listening to music and spending time with friends and family. She likes to keep fit at the gym as well as getting out in the mountains. She has a 4.112 weighted GPA. She is planning to attend college to study engineering or environmental science.
Parker Pettit, the son of Tyler and Jackie Pettit, was named a student of the month for January.
A senior at Sandpoint High School, Parker Pettit will graduate first in his class with a 4.4 GPA and having achieved 1520 on his SAT test.
He has been accepted to attend the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall to study computer science and artificial intelligence.
MIT is recognized as the leading university in the world in this field. Along with his studies, he will continue to play quarterback for the university's football team.
Pettit leaves Sandpoint High as the top-rated quarterback in the history of the school with career marks of 6,271 total yards. (4,462 passing and 1,809 rushing) 60% completion ratio 45 passing TD, 19 rushing TD.
He also led the Bulldogs to seven playoff wins, was a two-time IEL offensive player of the year, was the 2022 IEL Player of the year, Inland NW Player of the Year, Idaho Sports.com North Idaho POY in addition he holds several school records, one of which is the most TDs in a game at eight (seven passing and one run) and the longest TD pass at 92 yards.
Pettit has played varsity basketball since his freshman year as well. He enjoys playing guitar, camping and reading in his spare time.
