POAC’s Kaleidoscope brings art to kids
Kaleidoscope, a children’s art program facilitated by the Pend Oreille Arts Council, was able to bring quality art experiences to over 600 children during the 2022-23 school year.
From October through May, children in grades 3 to 6 benefited from art lessons taught by 16 dedicated volunteers. These lessons are designed on a year-to-year continuum to teach the elements of art such as line, color, and shape. Children are being prepared for advanced critical thinking coursework in high school and beyond.
“I’ve learned that we all have our own unique styles, and you don’t have to be perfect,” one Northside Elementary student stated.
“I’ve learned that this expands me beyond my limits, and anything is possible,” said another.
Teachers also see the benefit of Kaleidoscope. A teacher at Sagle Elementary stated, “My students learned so much about the elements of art and always looked forward to each lesson. I loved how history was included in each lesson,” she added.
POAC provides all the art materials needed for the lessons as well as lesson plans and volunteer training. The art classes are held approximately once a month.
Volunteers are crucial to the success of Kaleidoscope. Many of the volunteers have been teaching the lessons for years. Others are completely new to the program. Often, volunteers are parents or grandparents of the children. Although many local artists serve as instructors, an art background is not necessary. Kaleidoscope is the perfect volunteer opportunity for individuals who enjoy working with children.
The Kaleidoscope Program is currently taking applications for more volunteers for the 2023-2024 school year. Those who are interested and would like more information should contact Claire Christy at the Pend Oreille Arts Council office at 208-263-6139 or by email at poacasst1@gmail.com.
