Hide tanning class coming to town
Kaniksu Land Trust has partnered with master hide tanner Rain Gorenc from Breathing Life Tannery to offer North Idaho residents a four-day traditional tanning course.
Most modern fur-on hides are processed with harsh, toxic chemicals, officials said. This class will offer reasons as to why traditional brain tanning methods are cleaner and safer for the environment and for you. Brain tanning replaces the normal chemicals that hides are soaked in now and instead uses the natural fats and enzymes of animal brains to break down the connective tissues.
Each participant will take home a finished fur that will last a lifetime. This class is open to adults and children 12 years and older with an accompanying parent or guardian.
The cost is $450 for the full four-day course. Participants wanting to work on a hide together are allowed to pay for just one registered spot. All supplies will be provided. Space is limited so register now at bit.ly/3D3dZhy.
The event will be held at 11735 W. Pine St. in Sandpoint on July 21-24.
