Robert Norman Larsen, 102

| July 11, 2023 1:00 AM

Robert Norman Larsen, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, bid farewell to this world on July 5, 2023. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of his loved ones and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born January 13, 1921, in San Francisco, Calif., Robert was the beloved son of Erik and Caroline Larsen. Raised in Oakland, Calif., he had dreams of attending the University of California, Berkeley after graduating from high school. However, his path took a different turn when his father passed away, and Robert selflessly chose to support his mother by joining the workforce.

During World War II, Robert joined the Navy and sailed across the Pacific. His courage and dedication led him to graduate from officer's school, and he later sailed the Atlantic after the war's end. Following his military service, Robert found solace and companionship in Paris, where he lived alongside his dear friends from the Navy, Ernie and Ralph.

Returning to California, Robert worked for Pacific Telephone Co and became an integral part of the company. While pursuing his career, he remained active in his community, playing basketball in local Bay Area leagues and indulging in his passion for skiing as a proud member of a ski club.

In 1953, Robert's life took a beautiful turn when he married Sue Fairbanks. Together, they welcomed two children, Lynn and Alan, and embarked on a journey to Lake Tahoe when Robert's career brought him there. Despite promising future promotions, Robert made the selfless decision to prioritize his family's well-being and chose to raise his children in the serene beauty of Lake Tahoe.

Robert's love for skiing permeated his family life. He played a pivotal role in starting the first ski team at Sierra Ski Ranch, where his children learned to ski and race. Known for his generosity, he often brought a car full of enthusiastic youngsters to the slopes every weekend, sharing the joy of skiing with others.

During the summers, Robert's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as he owned and operated a popular batting cage and go-cart facility that remains a fond memory for local residents to this day.

In 1986, Robert faced the end of his first marriage. He found solace living with his daughter in Tahoe until fate smiled upon him in 1987. True love reunited Robert with Marianne, the love of his life, and they embarked on a remarkable journey together. In 1988, they joyfully exchanged vows, sealing their deep bond.

Seeking a new chapter in their lives, Robert and Marianne relocated to Hope, Idaho, where they built their dream home in 1989. Their days were filled with shared adventures—skiing, fishing, and cherished moments with their friends, affectionately known as the "lunch bunch." A favorite pastime was introducing the group to the lively game of "farkle," which became a cherished Saturday night tradition.

Among his many passions, fishing held a special place in Robert's heart. He and Marianne spent countless summers in their motorhome, casting lines in the serene waters of Lake Koocanusa. The cherished memories of fishing trips with their adoring grandchildren continue to be spoken of with fondness.

In 2017, Robert experienced profound loss when he bid farewell to Marianne, the love of his life. Overcoming the challenges, he found solace in the embrace of his daughter and continued to spend summers in Hope until 2021, creating new memories along the way.

On July 5, 2023, the good Lord called Robert Norman Larsen home to reunite him with his beloved Marianne. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion that will forever be cherished.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Erik and Caroline Larsen, and his brothers, Alfred and Harold. He is survived by his loving daughter, Lynn Larsen, his son, Alan Larsen, his step-daughters, Karen Weston and Linda Krowel, his grandchildren, Andrew Larsen (Alyssa), Eric Larsen (Natsuki), Chelsey Larsen (Darren), Anna Larsen, Catherine Larsen, Anthony Larsen, Heather Zucarro (Ron), Kenny Krowel (Morgan), and his great-grandchildren, Cailyn, Ellie, Ivory, and multiple nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on July 15th at 11:00 a.m. at the Hope Cemetery, where family and friends will gather to pay their final respects to a remarkable man, who touched countless lives.

In our hearts and cherished memories, Robert Norman Larsen shall forever reside. May his soul find eternal peace, reunited with his beloved Marianne, in the comforting embrace of the heavens.
