| July 15, 2023 2:36 PM

SANDPOINT — Two adults and a child were killed after the vehicle they were in failed to yield the right of way to a southbound freight train, and was struck. A second child in the car survived the collision.

Idaho State Police said the driver of a Subaru Forester was eastbound on W. Selle Road from N. Boyer Road at about 11:14 a.m. when the male driver, 37 of Sagle, failed to yield to the southbound train. The vehicle was struck by the train, which forced the Subaru off the roadway, where it overturned.

A 31-year-old female, also of Sagle, and two juveniles were also in the vehicle. All were wearing seatbelts.

The ages of the juveniles were not released by ISP.

ISP officials said both adults and one of the juveniles were pronounced deceased at the scene. The other juvenile was transported to a nearby hospital via ground ambulance before being flown by Life Flight to a Spokane hospital. There was no information available at press time on the youth's condition.

The train operators were not injured.

A Nixle alert was sent out by the Bonner County Sheriff's Office roughly 30 minutes after the collision advising residents the intersection was closed and likely would be for an extended period of time. As of 9 p.m., there was no information on when the road would reopen.

The incident remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.
