Mrs. Wanda Robinson, Sandpoint, was elected senior vice commander for the Department of Idaho Auxiliary at the 33rd state convention of Disabled American Veterans held in Boise. She is a charter member of Ft. Sherman Auxiliary at Coeur d’Alene.

EDITORIAL: WATERGATE’S SILVER LINING

Watergate should teach skepticism toward those officeholders and politicians that advocate more government in every aspect of life as a sovereign remedy for every human problem. This great lesson of Watergate should not be lost on a nation whose people place high value on individual independence.

TO CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Sunday’s open house to honor the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Fielden Poirier, Sr., will be held in their Blanchard home. Wed in Seattle in 1923, they have lived in Blanchard all their married life. Both are children of Blanchard pioneers. Mrs. Poirier, nee Alice Graham, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Graham, who owned sawmills at Priest River and Seven Mile Falls Bridge. Mr. Poirier is the son of Louis Poirier, who with two partners, started the Blanchard Trading Co. Store in 1912.

FINNEY IS WINNER IN BABY CONTEST

John Alvan Moyle Finney, 15 mos. old, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Finney and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Alvan Finney, was named Mr. Inland Empire in the recent Coeur d’Alene Press Baby Contest.

July 16, 1948 – NEWS FROM HOPE

A group of friends gathered at the Geo. Johnson home Friday in honor of George Jr.’s 16th birthday.

Building continues in East Hope with Mr. Tate, who bought property a couple years ago, starting the foundation for a new home and Capt. Erling Gasman, who owns the lake front near the Rainbow resort, preparing to do extensive building. In Hope, Mrs. Yehling’s new home is being built near the highway west of town and a new home is going up for Mr. and Mrs. Blackmere on the property recently purchased near the Campbell residence.

OFFICIALS ASKED TO DAM HEARING

Gov. C.A. Robins, Senators Dworshak and Taylor and Congressmen Goff and Sanborn are invited to a county-wide public meeting later this month on flood control and the Albeni Falls dam proposal. The date will be set to suit the convenience of the officials.

EMPLOYMENT UP AS LOGGING BOOMS

Logging operations increased sharply in the Panhandle, causing a sharp gain in job openings. Occupations in demand include fallers, bulldozer operators, hookers, jammer operators, logging truck drivers, setters and edgermen. Approximately 175 sawmill workers were recalled to jobs in the Priest River area. Further increases in employment in the logging and lumbering industries are expected.
